Logistics rescue – inadequate stretch film was jeopardising dispatch
The company ships hundreds of pallets to retail chains every day. Speed, safety and reliability of packaging are critical to their logistics. After a change of film supplier, problems with the quality of the packaging began to arise.
The customer was reportedly using a 23 µm film with an elongation of 150%, but in practice:
- The foil had a smaller actual thickness and yardage than declared
- Frequent breakage during packing
- The pallets were released during transport
- Customer complaints and returns soared
After checking the samples, we found that the actual thickness of the film was only about 18 µm and the yardage was 20% lower than declared.
We suggested:
- Proven film with a realistic thickness of 23 µm and an elongation of 250 %
- Testing in production (A/B testing)
- Regular weighing of rolls and record of yardage in the label
